APOLONIJA SUSTERSIC STUDIO

About

Apolonija Šušteršič is a visual artist, architect and researcher. Her work is a critical analysis of space, usually focused on institutional and cultural politics, urban planning and architecture. Her interest begins with the phenomenological study of space and extends into the social and political nature of our living environment.

She usually carries out extensive research into a specific situation found on location, and uses it as the starting point of a project. The result is not only presented as analytical criticism but already contains a suggestion for the future: she looks for alternative possibilities and makes proposals from a hybrid position that reaches beyond art and architecture.

She often creates new projects for group exhibitions and biennials, each made for a specific situation. Her practice aims to engage with the local context and its people and to create a new situation, a new project. The works are socially committed and often take the form of everyday-life activities, such as a juice bar, a café, a garden, a meeting room, a bike-loan service or a neighbourhood kitchen. They are made together with architects, urban planners, curators, sociologists and the local population.

Her recent work includes NJOKOBOK, a long-term project in Oslo with the chef Youssou Diop; Neighbours & Citizens, which began in Gävle and has grown into a network of planted apple trees; A Political Classroom at Tensta Konsthall in Stockholm; A Palestine Archive at the U3 triennial in Ljubljana; and Biodiverse Garden, a public art competition entry for SoThA in Bochum (3rd place, 2026).
